Fresh Ways With Vintage Decor

Hello everyone!  I hope you have had/are having a lovely weekend?  Today I wanted to share with you some images from the September issue of Reclaim Magazine, and my styling feature.  I know not everyone can get hold of the magazine easily, so it’s nice to share with you here!  I love the whole ethos of Reclaim, it’s all about embracing vintage decor, and breathing new life into old things.  I feel very lucky to be able to shoot for them.  So without further ado, here is my feature on fresh ways to decorate with vintage.

Fresh ways to decorate with vintage…

I have a very eclectic approach to decorating my home, and love to find new ways to use my vintage finds for practical or decorative elements!  Whether it’s a lick of paint or completely repurposing an object, think outside the box to breathe new life into old treasures.

Repurposed Vessels

I’m always on the hunt for unusual vessels that catch my eye, to use as planters, vases or candle holders.  I found these amazing vintage soft cheese drainers (see photo above) at The Country Brocante, and I love their slightly rusty, industrial feel.  I’ve put tea lights in mine, but they would also look wonderful planted with succulents.

Reclaimed Pallet Cupboard Doors

I knew that I wanted my kitchen to incorporate lots of reclaimed elements, so I had these cupboard doors made from old pallets.  You could leave them plain for a natural, rustic feel, or paint them in the colour of your choice – I was inspired by pretty pastel beach huts, so I painted mine using tester pots before giving them a light wax.

Pallets – Try Gumtree or Freecycle, or even just keep an eye out for abandoned pallets.

Paint – buy tester pots from your local DIY store

Vintage Map Wallpaper

I was lucky enough to recently find a job lot of lovely old maps at a car boot fair, and my son and I decided they would take a great feature wall in his bedroom.  Especially as they show areas which mean something to him.  If you don’t want to go for a whole feature wall, try finding a vintage map of an area that means seething to you, and get it framed.

So there you have it folks!  Not long now until the Christmas issue comes out, which is one that I’m particularly proud of!  I have not one, but two features in there, and I can’t wait to share them with you.

Love your pallet doors, Tamsyn. Even though it’s been around for sometime now, I’m still really fond of the whole Shabby Chic look. I remember the first time I found one of Rachel Ashwell’s stores. I was in San Francisco, CA in the Laurel Village area, and I just stumbled on it. I was quite young then. I bought (almost) all of her books. About 15 years ago she did an event at a store in Mill Valley, CA. I went there, with all of my books in hand, and she signed every one of them. She couldn’t have been more charming or delightful.
